Small doses, and I try to back off when I reach the point of diminishing returns or I start to feel an overuse injury coming on.Dirty Runninghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11941067370886942981noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4376658065276829001.post-87298606310608175342013-02-11T06:29:19.359-08:002013-02-11T06:29:19.359-08:00great post. number 7 is key. when you are in the b...great post. number 7 is key. when you are in the best shape you are always lightest. be careful of the track...it can be like playing with fire. I took a Vi right before the start, and that coupled with my morning coffee, definitely helped.Dirty Runninghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11941067370886942981noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4376658065276829001.post-92112982527999720862013-02-05T14:43:19.481-08:002013-02-05T14:43:19.481-08:00Congrats on going sub 40! That's the same goal...Congrats on going sub 40! That's the same goal I have and I've managed just once or twice. It's funny, though, the way you describe the 10K is how I feel about the 5K. I'm more afraid of the 5K since it feels like it hurts and you have to go all-out the whole way, whereas in a 10K, I feel like I have to go fast from the start but the race doesn't *really* begin until mile 4. For both 5K and 10K racing, the only tip I would add is to thoroughly warm up; that is, jog a mile or so and run a couple of fast 800s before going to the start line. After that warmup, I like to have a Gu gel at the start so it kicks in and helps me a couple of miles in. Also, since we're talking a difference in seconds rather than minutes to make a goal, it helps to wear lighter shoes. This is why I prefer ultras: I don't like stressing out about seconds!
