I still pace respectably in the sixes but I feel like I can go further if I get the breathing down. This article should be a great start (I've always been a fan of run softly - I call it run "quietly"). I thought I'd share something I read today and get your input: breathe from the stomach/diaphragm, NOT the chest. Your stomach should suck in then balloon out - don't breath by expanding your chest... I think I've been chest breathing all these years! I can't wait to try it! Had this post in my head going into it, then cleared out everything and focused on two things (couldn't pick just one just yet!): running tall, and a lighter step. Man it felt good! It also somehow staved off the pain in my recovering pulled muscle. Like I said, good stuff, dude!Paigehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16936117159619262436noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4376658065276829001.post-12805560547951234172010-02-25T23:15:07.401-08:002010-02-25T23:15:07.401-08:00Dax, Enjoy reading your thoughts and reflections! ...Dax, Enjoy reading your thoughts and reflections!

I see that you are doing the Catalina Marathon. Hopefully you'll meet Eileen Waters and Sally Byram at the beginning or at the end. They are two of my heroes.

For me two spiritual marathons were The Catalina Marathon and the Avenue of the Giants. For me it was about finishing with mind/body/spirit all going across the finish line at the same moment. Catalina always allowed me to see where I am especially from mile 18 on.

Just finished a run around 9 this evening. Little over 12000 steps at a cadence around 185. Not running fast but practicing nose breathing between a 6 steps in and 6 steps out down to a 3 in/2 out or a 3 out/2in. When I first started nose breathing as a challenge I could go about 100 years before panic set it. Gradually worked up to marathon distance. My best through the nose was a 3:27.

Like you I had judo back in the 50's with Sensei Ben Sughi and Al Holtman. When I started to think about running fast, I realized that if running is whole body movement then the best way to get fast was to move in perfect sync as slowly as possible. That was my reasoning for learn tai chi.ozzie gontanghttp://mindfulnss.com/category/mindful-runningnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4376658065276829001.post-3171681289886022732010-02-25T16:49:55.088-08:002010-02-25T16:49:55.088-08:00Great post, Dax. I think instead, I'll try to "practice quietly" and "pay attention" tonight in SK class. I feel that volume is OK but hard running taxes you far more. Plus your recovery will really be the biggest issue at REALLY high altitude. Nothing heals. Even at my 8200ft recovery is slowed noticeably. Hydration is HUGE. It's also been shown (in a study done on Everest climbers) that an increase in simple sugars is more effective for fueling and recovery. It takes a ton more oxygen to break down fat and protein, so in the short term it is effective to eat more CHO and recover with a more simple CHO. Honey is great. I would say to keep the runs on the easy side and if you want more of a challenge then just run longer if you can. Promise you'll post tons of pics!!!?Luchohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07992289866901355978noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4376658065276829001.post-81746672908031582182010-02-25T13:46:09.015-08:002010-02-25T13:46:09.015-08:00Lucho - thanks for the link and the comments. Darkush.blogspot.com is cool and talks often about breathing technique. I've experimented a ton with this while running and soon the run turns in to a more successful meditation session than I ever had while trying sit still. I think the rhythmic breathing and movement of running lends itself to meditation. Hypoxia at high altitude enhances it too :)
I've raced twice down near Okinawa (Miyakojima to be exact) I love everything about the Japanese culture!Luchohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07992289866901355978noreply@blogger.com
